Mount Dora Church of Christ
Restoring First-Century Christianity in the Twenty-First Century
Welcome
Thank you for being concerned with spiritual matters and with the family of Christ here in Mount Dora. We are a un-denomination Christian community located in central Florida just north of Orlando. We hope that this web site answers most of your questions and leads you further along your path of discovering the Truth in this world. Please feel free to contact us at any time if we can assist you in any way. The bottom line is that you matter to us, because you matter to God.
We exist for a reason and everything we do is motivated by this statement of purpose: “To go to Heaven and take as many with us as possible.” To save the lost was the mission of Jesus (Luke 19:10) and he has passed this mission on to the church which He began before He ascended back to Heaven.
Our History
Though Christ started the church in the first century, the local congregation did not start in Mount Dora until 1932, and celebrated our 75th anniversary in 2007. From its humble beginnings in members homes and a public baseball field, to its current home at 1801 N. Donnelly St. The Mount Dora Church of Christ has always been Bible centered, mission minded, and family oriented.
Restoring God’s Design for Unity
Before His betrayal and crucifixion, Jesus prayed for unity among those who believe in God through the word of the apostles (John 17:20-21). God continued to make His desire for unity very clear in 1Corinthians 1:10. God’s plan was for everyone to “speak the same thing” and be united in “the same mind” and “the same judgment.” A casual look at the religious world today makes it quite clear that this mindset is not the way things are. This is the reason we plead with everyone to go back to the Bible and speak where it speaks and restore 1st century Christianity.
Restoring God’s Design for the Church
The church of Christ is not a building built by man, but a body of special people called out of the darkness and into His marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9). The Bible says that Jesus loved the church and gave himself up for her (Ephesians 5:25). Because of His love for the church he shed his blood on the cross for the remission of sins (Matthew 26:28). It is this Church that we seek to restore today – the Church that Jesus came to establish, the church that Jesus gave His life to purchase, the church that the Lord put on this earth in the 1st century. This is not just some hypothetical idea that cannot be accomplished. It can be done, and it is being done all around the globe. In His word God told us everything we need to know about the church that He established. He left us a pattern. By going back to the Bible and using that pattern we can restore first-century Christianity in the twenty-first century.
Restoring God’s Design for Worship
What a great honor God has bestowed on us that we can worship Him. With this privilege comes great responsibility. As God is the one who created us and the one who created worship, He is the One to whom our worship is to be directed and the only one who has the right to regulate what is done in worship.
In the New Testament, the first-century church gathered together to worship on the first day of every week (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:1-2). Through the New Testament we know that God authorizes His church to worship Him through five avenues. To be the first-century Church in the twenty-first century we must honor these God-given avenues of worship. We come together to worship our loving God. Knowing that God is the object of our worship, we seek to do and say the things that will bring honor and glory to His name, for of such He is so worthy.
We must sing as a congregation. Congregational singing is the only music that God authorizes in worship (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16). For this reason when you visit you will only hear congregational a cappella singing.
We must pray together. (Acts 2:42; John 16:23; Matthew 6:9) When you visit there may be many prayers offered to God, some publicly and some privately.
We must give back to the Lord as we have been prospered. (1 Corinthians 16:1-2; 2 Corinthians 9:7) When you visit, a collection plate will be passed amongst those gathered but as a visitor you should feel no obligation to give.
We must have the word of God proclaimed. (Acts 2:42; Acts 20:7; Acts 5:20; 2 Timothy 4:2) There will be a lesson presented at all of our gatherings that is Biblically grounded and presented by our preacher or other leadership.
We must observe the Lord’s Supper every first day of the week. (1 Corinthians 11:20; Acts 20:7) This is a time of observance and remembrance of Christ’s loving sacrifice on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins.
Restoring God’s Design for Salvation
Through His death, burial, and resurrection, Jesus became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him (Hebrews 5:9). It is His word which tells us what we must do to be saved.
We must have faith that Jesus is the Son of God. (Acts16:31; Romans 10:17; Hebrews 11:6; James 2:17) This faith comes through hearing and studying the word of God.
We must repent of our sins. (Acts17:30; Acts 3:19) Repent simply means to turn away and flee from the things that separate us from God.
- We must confess our Faith in Jesus. (Romans 10:9-10)
- We must be immersed into Christ. (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; Acts 22:16; 1 Peter 3:21; Romans 6:3-6)
- We must live a faithful life of service. (Revelation 2:10; 1Corinthians 15:58)
If we do what was done in the New Testament times we will be New Testament Christians, no more and no less. Let us go back to the Bible and restore First Century Christianity in the twenty-first century.
